Join Children’s Hospital here at Krohn Conservatory for a horticulture-based activity to inspire connection to growth and embrace our unique selves.

Seed heads are a fun and creative way for kids to learn about the life cycle of plants and how it can relate to their own growth journey. All living things have needs, and learning about our needs can set us up for a life full of joy, safety, and learning. Giving these seed heads what they need will steadily help them grow in multiple directions. Similarly, when kids have access to a healthy environment, where they feel safe and secure, they will grow. The act of nurturing a plant and seeing it grow can provide a sense of accomplishment and boost one’s sense of self-worth. Caring for these seed heads can encourage nurturing skills, provide opportunity to practice caring gestures and lastly, to plant positivity in our minds. It combines educational, physical, and psychological benefits within a fun and engaging format, making it a valuable way to engage with our natural world, while inspiring imagination and connection.

The program includes a slow guided walk with a sequence of soothing, nature-based readings, moments of stillness, and poetry led by Pam Lowe Cho, ANFT-Certified Forest Therapy Guide and Executive Coach. Forest Bathing is one of the most exciting and rapidly growing relaxation practices being used by wellness practitioners around the world. We all have a dark side, most of us keep it under wraps. Plants on the other hand often display theirs with fervor. This program dwells on the unseemly side of herbs and their kin from Ergot and St. Anthony’s Fire to Belladonna and doe-eyed beauties. From the devil’s bartender to the plant that killed Abraham Lincoln’s mother. Get Ready! This is not your grandmother’s-Chamomile-Tea-and-sweet-Anise-cookies view of herbs!

Join local Naturalist Carol Mundy for this unique look at Ohio Native Plants at Krohn Conservatory on September 20th at 1:00pm.

Native plants have always been part of the medicinal “tool kit” used by Indigenous people, settlers, immigrants as well as doctors and researchers. Even today, upwards of 40% of the medicines we use are plant-based. Ongoing research peels away the layers of the anecdotal uses of our native plants and substantiates many as beneficial medicines. This presentation looks at the history of a sampling of Ohio’s Native Plants and their role in providing medicine then and now.

As a naturalist, speaker, and writer, Carol Mundy taught for the University of Cincinnati and Hamilton County Park District, leading classes in urban wildlife issues, native plants, weed identification, and the historical uses of plants. She continues to offer lectures and workshops in her “retirement”. One of her favorite botanical projects was the design of the historical medicine display for the Ohio Governors’ Residence Heritage Garden & Lloyd Medicinal Garden.

Carol is the recipient of the Citation for Horticulture Education from the Garden Club of Ohio and the long-time host of a weekly radio program “Outdoor Life” on WMKV radio in Cincinnati. The show features unique topics and interviews tying together nature, science, art, and culture.
